Self Leadership
When we talk about leadership development, what comes to your mind?
For most of us the concept of leadership development involves the process of building leaders of other people—creating a connection between managers and the front line. Contents in a leadership development course might include communication, conflict management, team management and delegation etc.. etc...
Have you thought about what it means to lead yourself? That’s self leadership, and it’s the most important pillar in the leadership development process.
Self leadership reminds me of a quote...
“ the one who cannot acknowledge himself, can never succeed to become a good leader”
Now lets find out..
1.What is self leadership??
Self leadership describes how you lead your own life – setting your course, following it, and correcting as you go. Life and business are often intertwined, so it also reflects how you work with your teammates or colleagues…
2.Why is self leadership important?
Self-leadership is important because it is necessary to help you accomplish your professional goals and to be a good leader to others. Good leaders must have the ability to lead by example. ... Self-leadership allows a leader to influence others to take action so that the goals of the organization are met.
“Mastering others is strength; mastering oneself is true power”
-Plato
Leadership for me is more like parenting than managing it is a over glorified term.. But is very simple..
I will tell you 3 strategies of self leadership
- Self awareness
Now when we lead a team very rarely we get honest feedback.. And when we ask very often we receive is the silence. And then your team would say ya it was brilliant, very good etc. Which we know may not be true..
So i have a tool for it..
giving self feedback rate yourself on scale of 1 to 5 and then make that change in you
- Self reflection
In this you need to analyze your achievements, all the things you have did and all which you are going to do..
Tool- the tool for self reflection is giving 5mins to analyze and think of the targets you need to achieve and accomplish during the coming hours or the day
- Self regulations
In this you need to regulate your own self.. You will come across many diff types of people diff types of situations, get irritated, etc.. but you need to regulate yourself..
Tool- reframing… in this you need to analyze the situation and allot the time and things properly on the basis of a rating from 1 to 10, as many of us may have experienced less availability of time while leading a project or team..
These 3 are the strategies which will help you in self leadership.. Except this,
one of the main skill is the
enthusiasm for learning:-Almost all people I’ve seen who are great self-leaders are learning enthusiasts. They keep up with trends in their industry, are well-read, and love to learn and share new information. I’ve also noticed that they usually surround themselves with others who are also learning enthusiasts. For eg- Bill Gates is said to read about 50 books a year, and he credits that for providing him an advantage. And everyone of us knows where he is today..
I hope this may help you work on yourself..
Self leadership is something that helps oneself. It gives us an idea of where we stand and the areas where we need to grow. There will be many people you will listen to and be motivated by....but in the end you are the only one who can work on yourself and decide to create your own path to leadership.
